What You Will Take Away
Enhance Compassion and Attentiveness – Breathing
together increases mindfulness and connection with your partner.
Nurture Your Fondness and Admiration
– Think of
and express why you value your mate. What are his or her best qualities? Turn Toward Each Other – Keep real-life romance alive by letting your spouse know he or she is valued during the grind
of everyday life. It means responding
to your partner’s ordinary day-to-day comments.
Soft vs. Harsh Start-up – Learn to soften your approach to discussing difficult topics using
a “soft start-up” (honesty combined with kindness).
Repair Attempts and De-escalation – Even during the most heated discussions, couples can use techniques
to lower their stress levels and move the conversation forward by acknowledging even the most subtle movements toward repair
and de-escalation from your partner.
Overcome Gridlock – The goal is not necessarily to resolve the unresolveable, but to move from
gridlock to dialogue. The idea of this is to increase flexibility with each other and move to a deeper level of communication.
Active Listening – Learn how to truly listen to and empathize with your partner by
engaging in an active listening exercise.
